Two old ladies are sitting playing cards. There is a tree near them. There are children and birds over it. One old lady used to be an attractive woman, she was married to a successful architect, but he died. The other old woman was attractive too, but she did not marry. She was a performer and she took photographs too. The first old lady is called Susanna and lives in a small house next to the school. She has three slender daughters. She used to love them very much, but now she is old and, when one is old, one cannot love any longer. The second old lady is called Gabrielle; she studied Arts in a prestigious university. She was at one point very famous. Her friends used to call her avant-garde, but now she is old and, when one is old, one cannot be ahead of times. That boy running is Frank, Susanna’s youngest grandchild. He likes killing insects and playing football. He thinks his grandmother is ugly. I’m John, a normal human being who smokes cheap cigarettes. I am sitting on the grass fantasying on other people’s lives. I wait. No movements. Susanna is thinking she is going to win, but Gabrielle is cleverer. Frank wants something, maybe an ice-cream, or a soda pop. Susanna picks two, no sorry, wait, three coins from her leather purse. Frank seems to be happy. Gabrielle looks nervous, she remembers that a close friend died two weeks ago. Cancer. Everyone dies of cancer. She met this friend in a performance. She was disguised as a nun and suddenly a man wearing a military uniform appeared and started kicking her. The kicks were real. Then the nun took out a gun from… Frank is coming back. He is not alone. There is another child: short, red-haired, fatty. He is Frank’s best friend. His name is Patrick. Or Fatrick as Susanna likes calling him. Susanna is laughing, she thinks Patrick is odd. Susanna always mocks fat people for she hates them. Her father died when she was five and her mother married a fat man one year later. He was intelligent and witty, but he was fat and, as Susanna likes pointing out, being chubby and bright is nature’s mistake. Frank and Patrick go away. Gabrielle picks a card. An ace. She wins. Susanna looks sad, she has been losing for two weeks. Gabrielle talks about a movie she saw one week ago. It was about two women who murdered a man. Susanna saw it too, but she only remembers that at the very end both women committed suicide. Gabrielle thinks those women were impressive whereas Susanna thinks they were brainless. Susanna feels like going home. She calls Frank but Frank does not want to go home yet. Gabrielle looks nervous again. She thinks she will die of cancer very soon. Susanna goes away dragging Frank. Gabrielle takes a deep breath.
